“Blood on the Stone Floor - The story of the Lycan Sapphires”
The wind blew cold on the temperate forest of Yellowstone National Park. Old Faithful went off again, as it does so often. The winds were colder than before, and the sky’s color was a rich pink from the setting sun’s soft rays. Not many animals were out of their homes. An elk grazed silently near a small patch of grass that wasn’t wiped out from the sheer and utter cold. It was getting darker and colder by the minute, and one animal couldn’t agree more. A white wolf lay on a rock, in a small patch of clearing. Snow covered the wolf’s fur, hiding the blood-smeared white coat, and the paw prints in the snow near the wolf had drops of blood after the staggered steps. It was winter, and a storm was coming. The wolf had its head down on the stone, whining quietly. The gold-yellow eyes were sad and unforgiving to humans, but to another wolf that was passing, they had turned to pleading. The other wolf, which was a deep black, looked at the other and sniffed the bloody prints before seeing the reason the other wolf would not try to stand: A snare had cut into the white wolfs left back leg. The black wolf walks closer to the white one, who shivered when the wind blew hard again, this time the wind picking up more snow, making it seem like an entrancing dance. The black-as-night wolf places its paws on the rock, sniffing the white wolf. Curiosity was in the soft yellow eyes belonging to the black wolf. He whines lowly to the white wolf, asking in its own way, ‘what happened?’, and received a whine of pain from the hurt white wolf.
The black wolf sighs and looks at her. “What happened to your pack? Your family, have they left you?” he asks in his own way. The white wolf tries to stand, the weakened form desperately wanting some form of help. “I’m Nika. How long have you been hurt?” the black wolf, now known as Nika, asked the white wolf. The white wolf nods and, with some help off the rock, lies down near Nika’s forepaws. Nika watches the other wolf, his gaze intensifying as he sniffs the other wolfs’ foot. The metal snare wasn’t there, but the damage was done. With an effort, the wounded wolf raised its head. It was female Nika had never seen. Her eyes were pained and she had to be one of the most dazzling gals he had ever laid his eyes on! She smiles and rolls on her back, submitting to him. He sits down and looks at her. She didn’t speak. Whine, yes; speaking, no. It irked him to no extent about why she didn’t speak. ‘She could be a mute one. But only mute ones I’ve heard of are the ones guarding the “Lycan sapphires”. Why would a guardian be this far from her place? Nonetheless, when a storm is hitting… Could there have been an attack? But, why and how do humans know about the Lycan sapphires? ‘He wonders. He looks at the white wolf. She was still on her back, paws raised, and her gold eyes soft. Nika looks around with the corners of his eyes for a few moments. He sees no one and growls inwardly. ‘You’ve got to be kidding me! No other wolves heard her!?’ he wonders angrily and sighs after a moment. ‘She doesn’t need to hear me going off about nothing… best to keep my head for now. But there will be justice.’ He thinks with a soft growl on the last section of thought. She looks at him, slight confusion in her eyes. ‘Why did he growl? There’s no danger here…’ she wonder and looked at him, still tilting her head a bit. He smiles and bows shortly to her, hoping to ease her confusion. He stands back up again, looking at her with a smile. [First he growls, now he bows? Some boys…’ she thinks and scratches her neck lightly, an amulet that was hidden before showing easily. Black center where a blue item was resting inside out-rimmed in pure silver. She doesn’t notice, nor truly care as she looks at the white sky. The storm was coming in fast. Nika turns to the other wolf and nudges her cheek.
“Can you write your name; in our language, I mean?” He asks and smiles hopefully. ‘Please let her be able to tell me her name at least…’ he thinks. When he looks at her again, as he had turned at the sound of the wind, he sighs. She shakes her head, and his smile falters. He sits down and thinks for a moment. ‘Okay… she must know how to write in some language… even if it’s Lycan. I guess all I can do is start trying.’ he thinks, smiling at her again. He watches her for a moment and smirks lightly. “Okay… Do this, then. Can you mouth your name? Or possibly howl it?” he asks. He had excitement in his voice, only to be let down again as she shook her head. Nika sighs and nods. “I guess until I can figure out your name, I can call you ‘Princess’. ‘Course, up to you, milady.” He says and smiles, his ears perked happily. She stands and nods, bowing lightly to him. He chuckles, “No need for that action,” he adds, and turns to the sky again. The clouds were getting thicker. Nika narrowed his eyes and looked for any signs of birds; none at all. He looks at the female, he had dubbed ‘Princess’, and smiles again. His deep gold eyes had hope in them, even though already he was having problems trying to figure out who this beautiful female was. He moves to speak again and a shrill caw from a bird snaps his attention. The bird crowed loudly, “It’s happened! It’s happened!” and Nika looked at it, confused. The bird landed near him, after he tells Princess to hide herself incase the bird was merely a spy.
The bird was a brown, fat barn owl. Rigid old wings were stiff from the cold, and the bird cried for attention. ‘How did it get all the way here? Especially since he’s old, too... Smells like horses to me.’ Nika thinks, pulling his ears back and grimacing at the stench of the bird. “What’s happened?” he asks the old owl as it ruffled its painfully stiff wings. “The pack of the east,” it shrieked,” Their dead! I told them, I told them a thousand times! The humans wanted their white furs! Very valuable to the females who like to adorn animal skins!” it continues. “What happened to the pack?” Nika asks, taking a glance at Princess from the corner of his left eye. The bird shrieked loudly again, shock in its eyes still. ‘Whoever thought I’d be talking to a bird that’s acting so insane…’ Nika asks himself mentally and shakes his head lightly. The bird screeches in anger as it catches sight of Princess. “You led the hunters! You did it! WHY?!?!!” the bird screams and Nika growls, leaping in front of Princess. The bird takes flight, screeching curses and hateful words about idiotic wolves. Nika turns to Princess. “Stupid bird.” He mumbles, getting a nod of understanding from Princess.
“We need to get some shelter. You can stay with me, if you wish it. It’s going to get really bad out here, and I’m glad I came along here. Did you call out for help?” he asks Princess, the worry in his voice exuberant. She shakes her head and looked to the sky, watching the strange owl fly away. Nika follows her gaze and sees she slowly looked ahead of them. He followed her gaze and gasps lightly. A human had found them. Nika growls and looks at Princess, his gleaming black fur bristling. “Princess, I need you to follow me when I run. Don’t worry about the human. But let’s not take chances of the human being dangerous, shall we?” he barks, and Princess nods. She waits to follow Nika, her eyes changing to blue in color. She walks with Nika as he leads her to his den.
